Autumn? Bring it on!

Surely I can’t be the only person looking forward to the end of summer?

Let’s face it, weather-wise Summer bid us farewell a few weeks ago.

We hear the same old predictions every year. This summer will be the hottest on record. Get ready for the heatwave! Which inevitably means a couple of nice days followed by an almost biblical amount of rain.

I’ve become to think of British Summer weather as an obnoxious presence designed to play with our emotions. If you’ve put on a summer dress because the sun is out in the morning, you can guarantee it will bucket it out down in the afternoon.

It knows when you’ve forgotten your coat. It knows when you’ve left your brolly in the car.

“Amateurs!” laughs British Summer as it unleashes a months worth of rain in 20 minutes.

And it seems there’s no middle ground. It’s either torrential rain or absolutely boiling. I’m not cut out for hot weather. It’s sticky and sweaty and just plain miserable.

Unless you can lie by a pool with a cocktail (sans children), I can’t see any benefits in it being hot.

So, safe to say I shall be welcoming Autumn with open arms.

What’s not to love?

Let’s start with the beauty of Autumn. The colours. The oranges and reds and browns. The crunchy fallen leaves under foot.

Conkers!

The cool crispness in a morning. The dark evenings closing in earlier, meaning cosy nights in.

Hats, scarves, gloves and boots! It will be a relief to wear boots again. Due to unfortunate tan lines on my feet I’ve been forced to wear the same sandals all summer.

Comfort food. Soups and casseroles and roasts with all the trimmings.

Halloween. Bonfire night. Toffee apples and treacle toffee and parkin.

And most importantly, when Autumn does come, and the leaves fall from the trees it can only mean one thing…

The countdown to Christmas!
